The tunnel for Suzhou Metro Line 5, the first fully automated rail transit system in Jiangsu Province, got through on June 12, as the province is making smooth progress to build a fast metro network.
In Jiangsu, 21 metro lines in 6 cities are under construction with a total length of 662.9 kilometers.
Suzhou has by now opened 4 metro lines totaling 165.8 kilometers long. Five more metro lines under construction adds up to 186.6 kilometers. Among them, the 44.1-kilometer-long Line 5 includes 34 stations linking Wuzhong District and Suzhou Industry Park. After it opens, the line will help ease the transport pressure in downtown Suzhou and makes it easy to visit Taihu Lake and nearby destinations.
Nanjing, at the same time, has opened 10 metro lines of 378 kilometers long, with 9 more lines under construction. Self-driving technology will also be applied on the city’s Metro Line 7, which extends for 35.5 kilometers long and has 27 stations including 13 transfer stations. Currently, construction of the line’s 26 stations is underway, with major works completed in seven stations already. It is estimated that the line will start trial operation in December 2021.
Nantong has two metro lines under construction. Line 1, 39.2 kilometers along, will have 28 stations. The 20.9-kilometer-long Line 2 will include 17 stations in the first phase. The two lines, in a shape of cross, will link all sides to form the city’s essential public transport network.
