The departure ceremony for the 2025 China (Jiangsu) overseas medical teams was held in Nanjing on September 2.
A total of 48 members, mainly drawn from medical institutions in Xuzhou and Lianyungang, form the 35th medical team to Zanzibar, the 21st to Guyana, and the 21st to Malta.
Jiangsu is one of the earliest provinces in China to undertake overseas medical assistance missions. Since 1964, the province has dispatched 79 teams and 1,281 personnel to countries and regions including Zanzibar, Guyana, Malta, Iran, and Libya. Collectively, they have treated more than 10 million patients and performed over 300,000 surgeries.
Over the years, Jiangsu medical teams have established 16 specialist centers in recipient countries. These comprehensive efforts have expanded the scope of cooperation from single-discipline medical aid to broader health initiatives. Practices such as traditional Chinese medicine, tai chi, and free clinics were also warmly welcomed by local communities.
