The Jiangsu Provincial Department of Water Resources held a meeting in Suzhou on January 12 to promote the integrated development of water conservancy initiatives in the Yangtze River Delta, part of the delta region’s integration strategy.

Chen Jie, director of the department, has led a delegation to visit construction sites of major projects. The meeting heard reports by authorities from Suzhou, Wujiang and Kunshan. Chen said it’s important to double efforts to overcome difficulties, make innovation, and strive to be a trailblazer in the delta’s integration of water resources management.

Chen said the success of a number of projects showcases the collaboration between Jiangsu and Shanghai. He called for an early start of ecological renovation at the Kunshan section of the Wusong River and more efforts to speed up the conservation along the bankside of Yuandang Lake, a border lake between the two regions.

Stretching across Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shanghai, Taipu River is an artificial waterway built originally to divert flood from Taihu Lake to Huangpu River in Shanghai and then to the sea. Jiangsu has launched the renovation of 16 kilometers of the Taipu River, improve the environment and also highlight cultural attractions. This project is expected to be a role model of ecological development and will stimulate more positive changes to the whole river.
