Jiangsu’s digital economy reached 4 trillion yuan last year, accounting for over 40 percent of the province’s GDP and ranking second in the country, according to the eighth Jiangsu Internet Conference that opened in Nanjing on November 5.

The conference also released the "2020 Digital Jiangsu Development Report" and the “Report of New Infrastructure Development in Jiangsu’s Information Communication Industry".

Lyu Yan, project manager of the Jiangsu branch of China Mobile, said the 5G-powered driverless bus in Suzhou is the first in China to offer the regular service. The province has stepped up the application of 5G. By the end of September, the province had built and put into use 63,000 5G base stations this year, bringing the total number to 68,000. Arterial roads, transportation hubs and key venues in the province’s 13 cities that have subordinate districts are essentially covered by the ultrafast 5G network. Meanwhile, the province has also launched 69 renovations to integrate 5G with industrial Internet, achieving over 700 projects based on 5G application.

The province has also seen an accelerated application of Internet of Things (IoT), covering vehicles, public services, retail, agriculture, industry and logistics. Shen Hongbing, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said the combination of Internet and public health will lead to fundamental changes and contribute to the health management over a person’s whole life amid the use of data collection, storage and computing in the cloud. There will be more applications in the first aid and remote treatment.

According to experts in the event, to accelerate Jiangsu’s going digital drive, it’s necessary to focus on the development of blockchain, quantum science and technology, artificial intelligence, Big Data and other cutting-edge areas. The province needs to build a full-fledged ecosystem and give full play to the roles of data, information and knowledge as production factors. Jiangsu also needs to create a favorable environment for the rise of new industries and business models, promote industrial innovation, and foster new economic drivers.
