Amid a drop of 90 percent in passenger traffic in last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jiangsu saw a surge of 4.4 times in air cargo transportation, according to the province’s General Station of Immigration Inspection on January 20.

As the coronavirus began its global spread, the air industry came to a virtual standstill worldwide. It’s also true for the coastal province in an unprecedented year. Jiangsu’s 26 immigration inspection stations handled 1.416 million passengers, including 450,000 foreigners, a year-on-year fall of 54.8%, and 390,000 Jiangsu residents.

However, the number of international flights rose to 9,400 through the province’s nine airports. This included 4,300 flights by existing cargo aircraft and refurbished passenger plane, an increase of 4.4 times year-on-year.

The Jiangsu General Station of Immigration Inspection will continue to implement a 24-hour customs clearance system, promote administrative approval online with shortened time, and ensure the efficient border control measures for cargo ships and flights in order to support foreign trade.
