Wang Jianan won the men's long jump final at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, the United States with a last-round leap of 8.36 meters, grabbing China's first ever gold medal at the event.
Wang, an athlete of Jiangsu Province, previously won the gold medal at China's 14th National Games in 2021.
Born in Northeast China’s Liaoning Province in 1996, he later moved to live in Xuzhou City of Jiangsu. He joined the Xuzhou athletics team in 2010 and then the provincial team in 2011. He originally trained for the decathlon and then focused on the long jump in 2012.
Wang claimed the world U20 long jump title in Eugene in 2014. One year later, he snatched a world bronze in Beijing, the best result of China’s team at the time. Wang then made fifth place at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and a gold at the Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta.
