Jiangsu is the 3rd most innovative province in China, according to the China Regional Innovation Capacity Evaluation Report 2021 released in Beijing.

With the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the report was jointly produced by the China Science and Technology Development Strategy Research Group in cooperation with the China Innovation and Entrepreneurship Management Research Centre of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The annual report, now in its 21st edition, is seen as a top research into the country’s regional development.
Professor Liu Xielin at the School of Economics and Management of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, also head of the research, said over the past 20 years Jiangsu has always ranked among the top in the country, especially taking first place for eight consecutive years from 2009 to 2016.
In the past five years, Jiangsu’s spending on R&D accounted for 2.82% of its GDP. The province had over 32,000 high-tech enterprises, 36.1 invention patents per 10,000 people, and a digital economy of over 4 trillion yuan. Jiangsu’s strategic emerging industries and high-tech industries also accounted for 37.8% and 46.5% respectively of the total output value by industrial enterprises above the designated size.
