Nanjing Tech Week promotes innovation-driven development

Top scientists and business leaders shared their suggestions and insights of innovation a distinct identity of a city’s development during the 2020 Nanjing Tech Week that opened both online and offline on June 22.

Zhang Jinghua, member of the standing committee of the CPC Jiangsu Committee and also secretary of the CPC Nanjing Committee, said innovation is increasingly becoming the main driving force of Nanjing's high-quality development.

At present, the city has established nearly 400 new type of R&D institutions and introduced over 5,000 S&T enterprises, with the number of high-tech companies rising from 1,800 to 4,680. In two years, more than 700,000 new university graduates have worked and had their social insurance paid in the city. Data showed the industry output value of the city's high-tech firms reached 1.15 trillion yuan in last year and is expected to exceed 1.3 trillion yuan this year.

Bai Chunli, president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), said that the institution regards Jiangsu as the key region to accelerate the technology transfer and application to support the country’s new round of development of an innovation-based S&T system.

CAS, China's highest academic institution in natural sciences, also signed an agreement with Jiangsu provincial government to jointly develop the Nanjing Qilin Science and Technology City, with a focus on advancing information and artificial intelligence, life science, biosecurity and other fields. This agreement consists of strategic projects, such as the plan to build space research and control experiment facility.

Chang Jin, director of Purple Mountain Observatory (PMO) and an CAS academician, said Nanjing has risen to be a domestically leading research powerhouse of dark matter particle amid the progress brought by the cosmic 'Monkey King' satellite.

Professor You Xiaohu of Purple Mountain Laboratories said the facility launched the preliminary study of the 6G mobile network from the outset and has explored the solutions for some key technical issues.

Experts said Nanjing has built up an inspiring culture that values basic research, supports innovation and allows researcher to be committed to their work. The city boasts unique resources for S&T education and research as it is home to 53 universities, 830,000 university students, 82 academicians and a large number of research institutions. The city has witnessed the rising of new type of R&D institutions that incorporate the participation of government, industry, academia, organization, and financing. Such institutions will greatly promote the technology transfer and application to support enterprise innovation.
