The World Coastal Forum 2023 held in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province, which attracted nearly 1,000 participants from 34 countries and organizations, have yielded a series of accomplishments, according to the press conference held on September 26.
The exchanges and discussions in the three days focused on coastal ecosystem protection and restoration, migratory species protection, and sustainable development, said Fan Li, deputy director of the Department of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Natural Resources.
The specialized forum on Coastal Coordination for Migratory Species Protection delved into improving the legal system, advancing basic research on bird migration, leveraging high technology, and fostering international partnerships. Participants also shared their practices and agreed to enhance the conservation of coastal ecosystems like mangrove forests.
Two technical standards for carbon stock surveying of tidal and salt flats, as well as shoreline classification and surveying were released at the forum, with the aim of underpining carbon storage estimation in coastal wetlands.
The WCF organizers also unveiled the Yancheng Consensus, which underscores the significance of the coastal areas and calls on increased cooperation for ecological protection and low-carbon development.
