Jiangsu has built 104 model fever clinics that demonstrate the best standards and practices, four more than its original goal for 2021, in an effort to strengthen the capacity to prevent and control COVID-19.

Nanjing Gulou Hospital is home to one of the first batch of 47 model fever clinics recognized by the province. Wang Jun, director of the hospital's emergency department, said the fever clinic is like a mini-hospital well-equipped to receive patients at any time and perform different functions while reducing cross-infection risks. For example, it has an independent CT scan room and three devices for rapid nucleic acid testing, which can deliver the test result in one hour, so it can cope with the surging number of patients possibly infected with the virus.

The fever clinic has 19 medical and nursing personnel, all of whom have passed rigorous training and assessment. Efficient and standardized treatment of fever patients is available 24 hours a day.

According to Ju Rong, vice president of Nanjing Jiangning Hospital, there are standard fever clinics and isolation wards in all three areas of the hospital, which can receive 200 to 300 patients per day. The fever clinic also offers service to women for routine pregnancy check-up.

The Jiangsu Provincial Health Commission has formulated construction standards and service specifications to guide localities to carry out the upgrade of fever clinics. The province now has 172 renovated fever clinics that meet the new national standards.
