Six deputies of Jiangsu Province at the third session of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) took video interviews on May 24, outlining the coronavirus response and efforts to bolster economic and social development in different regions.

NPC deputy Xiang Xuelong:

In recent years, Lianyungang has focused on a high-quality development and leapfrogging growth, coordinating efforts for significant progress in achieving the first centenary goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects. By the end of last year, the city had completed 94.6 percent of tasks for the goal and is poised to keep pace with the province to realize the goal.

In this year, the city will give top priority to faster development, ensure progress in key undertakings, and go all out to promote 16 provincial and 335 municipal key industrial projects. Amid the proactive COVID-19 response in the first quarter, the city maintained stable growth in GDP, general public budget revenue, industrial investment and other major indicators. The growth also ranked among the best in Jiangsu in terms of consumption of industrial electricity and taxable sales volume for industrial enterprises.

NPC deputy Zhang Aijun:

Suqian, as the province's backward region, still faces many development problems, such as a relatively small economic size, relatively weak innovation capacity and lackluster public service. As this year is the final year to finish building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, the city will double efforts to make up for the shortcomings and weaknesses with specific and pragmatic projects.

NPC deputy Lu Yongquan:

The government work report emphasized that priority will be given to new infrastructure and new urbanization initiatives and major transportation and water conservancy projects.  This is a great mission and also means a heavy responsibility. We will make epidemic prevention and control a routine and also implement key transport tasks.

NPC deputy Li Yaping:

Firstly, Suzhou will take the lead in pursuing the innovation-driven development, attract more innovation resources, promote industrial transformation and  boost institutional reform.

Secondly, Suzhou will take the lead in opening up to drive the growth and expand the development opportunities under the Belt and Road initiative. The city will make effort to stabilize the international market share, pilot new projects at a higher level, and improve the role of the Suzhou area of the Jiangsu pilot FTZ as well as China-Singapore and cross-straits cooperation platforms.

Thirdly, Suzhou will be a pioneer in shifting the economic driving force, optimize the growth, and create ten manufacturing hubs each with an industrial output of over 100 billion yuan. Efforts will also be made to stimulate consumption and support new growth points.

Fourthly, Suzhou will ensure progress in improving people's livelihood, with efforts focusing on science and education, culture, health and ecological environment.

NPC deputy Wang Weifeng:

Tongshan District in Xuzhou City has always focused on development as the top priority, made consistent efforts to develop industry and transformation, optimized the structure while increasing the economic size, and improved efficiency in accelerated growth. Priority is also given to increase people’s income, ensure employment and boost livelihood through efforts on eight fronts. Meanwhile, persistent efforts were made to improve environment so all people can share the fruits of prosperity at the same time.

NPC deputy Wu Huifang:

Yonglian Village in Zhangjiagang City started industrial development earlier and has a large proportion of traditional industries. Efforts have been made to optimize the industrial structure through transformation and upgrading. Over half of products by the village-run Yonggang Group are special steel and the enterprise, which has become a top national brand, is now shifting to intelligent and digital manufacturing. The village has gone all out to develop new industries with an aim to increase their industrial output to over half of the total by next year.

Yonglian Village has invested more than 6 billion yuan to help enterprises improve environmental protection. Another ambitious project underway is to renovate the residential area, industrial zone, and farming area in line with the requirements of the scenic area at 5A level, the highest level in the rating system. The village is also increasing infrastructure construction, trying to make the community more digital, introducing smart waste sorting so that farmers live a quality life.
