The fish consumption in Jiangsu Province has reached 60 kilograms per capita per year, nearly three times the global consumption level of 20.5 kilograms, local media reported on June 13.

The coastal province, historically known as "the hometown of fish and rice" for the fertile farmland alongside abundant water resources, is the only one in China to have both a big river and sea area. Among agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery, the province has the highest output value per mu on average from fishery, about over 11,000 yuan, and 4,000 yuan higher than the national level.

Jiangsu’s shrimp and crab products are also known at home and abroad, with output value of freshwater fishery industry ranking first in China for 30 years in a row. Fishery produces in the province are mostly of high values while the farming area for specialty fishery and pollution-free aquatic products accounts for over 76 percent and 80 percent of the total, respectively.

According to the Jiangsu Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the province generated 4.948 million tons of aquatic products, fishery culture industry brought output value of 170.8 billion yuan, and the total value exceeded 338 billion yuan.

Data from the State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture showed, total fish production will increase to 204 million tons by 2030, up about 15 percent in 2018. Global fish production is estimated to have reached about 179 million tons in 2018, with a total first sale value estimated at $401 billion. Aquaculture production contributes to 46 percent of the total production and 52 percent of the global consumption. China, the world's top fish producer, has provided large quantities of fish since 1991, even higher than the accumulated amount of many other countries in the world.
