Xiaoxihu Neighborhood, a renovated block with architectural legacy of the Ming and Qing dynasties, has recently become an internet sensation for the old buildings and the sustainable approach of renovation.

Among 22 historic zones in Nanjing, Xiaoxihu, also called Dayoufang Lane, stands out for better preserved buildings with a rich history and old urban charm. When local authorities decided to refurbish the area, a priority was to maintain the original style and reinforce the old buildings with least change of the overall structure and fabric.

For example, a major improvement was to build the tunnel underground to carry utility lines such as electricity, water and sewer pipes, as well as communication utilities like fiber optics. This has greatly facilitated life of local residents and paved the way for business development.

The approach, in contrast to the blind demolition, turns out to be well welcomed as it keeps live the genuine heritage in a place that many people have called home for generations.

Among 810 families in the neighborhood, nearly a half chose to stay in the renovated area and start to live a new life. For example, the No. 31 Compound at Duicao Lane is home to two families and also a new design workshop. In addition, the space freed up in the project also hosts café, bookstore and other amenities that enhance the vitality of the whole area.
