Lianyungang City in Jiangsu Province offered a wide range of activities to promote night-time economy, making it a key part of the cultural and tourism development efforts during the May Day holiday.

The city’s Haizhou District highlighted a spectacular concert featuring traditional music, the natural landscape of the Yanhe River, which was originally used to transport salt, and creative settings. Visitors had many chances to listen to the Huaihai opera and Five Gongdiao of Haizhou, an art form with a history back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

The area’s Yanhe Lane, one of the top ten nightlife venues in Jiangsu Province, attracted throngs of visitors during the holiday. This success came after the historical block offered programs, such as a tour about Haizhou’s heritage related to Flowers in the Mirror, a novel in Qing Dynasty, an AR online treasure hunting, and light shows.

Tu Jun, head of the historical block, said these efforts created a large immersive show for visitors to have multisensory experiences centering on the river, from the delicious sea food to ancient melodies, sightseeing boat tours and tea sampling.

“The tables outside stores on the street were all full while the mouthwatering BBQ smell is in the air from 4 pm to 4 am, said Tu.

The average daily visitors exceeded 150,000 people during the May Day holiday, an increase of 224% over the same period last year.

In addition, the Yuwan scenic spot was also a huge attraction to tourists at night time as the designs featured not only lighting but also scenes depicted in Ci works in the Song Dynasty, a type of lyric poetry in the tradition of classical Chinese poetry. Visitors could also participate in traditional folk activities popular in the Song Dynasty, such as cuju, archetype of modern game of football.
