Jiangsu’s gross oceanic product (GOP) contributed 7.5% of the province’s GDP and accounted for 9.7% of the national GOP in 2023, according to a statistical bulletin recently released.
This increase followed comprehensive efforts in recent years. Jiangsu optimized its cargo transport structure by elevating the role of waterway transportation, and promoted the green transformation of ports, ensuring over 95% of discharged water pollutants from ships were treated. Notably, Nanjing Port’s Longtan Container Terminal received a five-star rating as a "Green Port."
The offshore wind power sector also played a key role in the transition to green development. In 2023, Jiangsu’s offshore wind power generation increased by 3.2% year-on-year, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 42 million tonnes.
In terms of ecological protection and restoration, Lianyungang and Yancheng successfully completed their planned tasks.
In 2023, the province also announced an action plan for marine industry development with goals set for 2025 and 2030. Jiangsu aims to enhance scientific and technological innovation, achieve green and intelligent transformation, and foster a coordinated development pattern across its rivers, sea and land areas.
Data showed that the added value of the marine engineering equipment manufacturing and marine chemical sectors expanded by 3.3% and 5.8% year-on-year, respectively. Meanwhile, the marine fisheries sector saw a 2.9% increase in added value over the previous year.
