Jiangsu’s pilot project aimed at fostering transportation hubs successfully passed the acceptance review organized by the Ministry of Transport on April 8, earning an excellent rating.
The project encompassed efforts on various areas, including the optimization of the spatial layout of such hubs. The expansion and renovation of the terminal at Nanjing Lukou International Airport has significantly bolstered the city’s role as a key international transportation hub. The Taicang Port in Suzhou has been transformed into a major sea freight distribution center and a domestic trade transfer hub. The Tongzhou Bay Port in Nantong now features an automated container terminal.
Furthermore, the comprehensive transportation hub connecting Lianyungang, Xuzhou and Huai'an plays a crucial role, handling about 65% of the transit trade volume with Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, and Central and West Asia. Key projects include the China-Kazakhstan (Lianyungang) Logistics Cooperation Base and the dry port in the Horgos-Eastern Gate special economic zone.
Jiangsu has taken measures to enhance the comprehensive service capacity of airports, ports, and railways. For example, the Nanjing airport now boasts two terminals and two runways. The Jiangsu Jingdong Cargo Airlines has obtained its air operator certificate, and the Sunan Shuofang International Airport has expanded its facilities to include an international express (cross-border e-commerce) supervision center. Notably, the Lianyungang Port has developed a 300,000-ton channel, a 300,000-ton crude oil terminal and a 400,000-ton ore terminal. The Phase 4 of the Taicang Port container terminal has also commenced operations.
This transport hub-centric initiative has spurred growth in the aviation manufacturing and logistics sectors, particularly leveraging the airports of Nanjing, Wuxi and Huai’an. Huai'an has attracted express companies like SF Express to establish their regional distribution centers. The Taicang Port area is set to become the largest ro-ro terminal for car transportation in the Yangtze River.
