SiCentury Semiconductor Technology (Suzhou) Co Ltd has relied on its self-developed silicon carbide epitaxy equipment to realize faster wafers processing, with the semiconductor devices widely used in new energy vehicles, power electronics, and other fields.
The company’s progress has benefited greatly from the support of Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute (JITRI). Chen Xiaoqiang, director of the institute’s Information Technology Division, said silicon carbide epitaxy equipment is a key part of semiconductor industry chain and has high value. Therefore, project managers at JITRI have been actively promoting connection, cooperation, and technological achievements among research institutes, government departments, and enterprises.
Project manager Shi Jianxin began building a team in March 2020 and then established SiCentury half a year later. To support the company’s development, JITRI took innovative measures, including applying for 20 million yuan from the provincial financial funds. These efforts led to a great achievement in January as SiCentury entered the mass production stage and now boasts a market value of 1.665 billion yuan.
Tech start-ups in the province have also made hard pioneering efforts to achieve new growth. Over 10 years ago, over 90% of domestic chip testing equipment relied on imports. Despite challenges including high R&D input, high risk, and a long development cycle, Nanjing-based Macrotest has risen as a high-tech company mainly engaged in the development and sales of semiconductor test equipment.
Bao Zhijie, general manager of the company, said such equipment consists of various complex software and hardware, making it much more difficult than realizing a certain function or creating a single module. The company has successfully developed a large-scale mixed-signal test device after 10 years of development, breaking the foreign monopoly in this field, according to Bao.
