Jiangsu Province released a white paper on intellectual property on April 26, the 21st World Intellectual Property Day, showcasing its great strides on many fronts in the sector.
The province’s patent applications reached 499,167 in 2020, up 58.77% year on year. A total of 9,606 applications were filed under the patent cooperation treaty (PCT) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), up 44.78% year on year. With 36.14 invention patents per 10,000 people, Jiangsu remained first place among province-level regions in the country.
To improve the quality of patents, Jiangsu has continued a support program and built 62 centers for the creation and demonstration of high-value patents. Such efforts will help Jiangsu to become a competitive hub of patents and boost its technical development.
Zhi Suping, director of Jiangsu Intellectual Property Administration, said the province will strengthen efforts to help universities, new type of R&D institutions and leading companies to make progress in creating high-value patents, especially in key industries.
Jiangsu will improve intellectual property rights services to the Nanjing-based Purple Mountain Laboratories, Gusu Lab located in Suzhou Industrial Park, and Taihu Lake Lab, which are all major vehicles to facilitate advanced research and development. In addition, it will guide creation of patents in its well-developed industries, and promote the formation of intellectual property alliances in industries such as integrated circuits, new materials and the Internet of Things.
In 2020, the provincial government incorporated IPR protection performance into the business environment evaluation system. The Jiangsu Provincial People's Congress, the legislature, will step up efforts on the formulation of a regulation on the promotion and protection of IPRs.
