The 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020) saw great strides made in major perspects in Jiangsu Province to contribute to development strategies including the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the Belt and Road, and the integration of the Yangtze River Delta.
Showing the economic powerhouse’s miracle-like growth at an amazing speed, such projects have increased general wellbeing and sense of happiness and safety in the coastal province.
Major industrial projects are the bedrock of Jiangsu’s steady growth. According to the provincial Development and Reform Commission, nearly 900 key projects with the completed investment of more than 2.7 trillion yuan were implemented. Among them, nearly 600 were industrial projects that have received investment of nearly 1 trillion yuan.
The province also made progress in achieving technological self-reliance, which is at the heart of industrial chain development. Jiangsu offered full support to major S&T infrastructure projects and accelerated the R&D of core technologies, such as network communication safety, gas turbines and nanomaterials.

The province also give priority to transport sector. During the five years, investment into the roads, railways, water and air transport infrastructure totaled 629.3 billion yuan, 160% of the amount in the 12th Five-Year Plan period. The ratio of investment in transport infrastructure to GDP increased from 1.32% in 2015 to 1.4%, while about 3 million new jobs were created.
Among the achievements are the China-Europe freight trains that link Jiangsu with over 70 cities in 22 countries as well as the better-connected high-speed railways and highways. Jiangsu also accelerated the transport construction to facilitate the Yangtze River Economic Belt initiative, added three more river-crossing passages in the period, and construction of 6 more is underway.
Data also showed that, over the past five years, the province completed the renovation of 250,000 households in its relatively underdeveloped northern area and invested over 20 billion yuan in infrastructure construction. In total, 1.3 million houses in shantytown areas were renovated with an investment of 546 billion yuan, enabling nearly 4 million people to move to houses in better condition. The province also added more than 110,000 hospital beds and 700,000 beds in nursing homes.
With a total investment of 100 billion yuan, Jiangsu also ensured smooth progress in key ecological and environmental projects related to the Yangtze River shoreline, Taihu Lake, and sewage and rubbish treatment. The province is moving steadily towards its goal of high-quality development with a better natural environment.
