Wuxi National Hi-Tech District (WND) plans to introduce and incubate 300 enterprises in three years with an industrial scale of exceeding 100 billion yuan, said Jiang Min, deputy mayor of Wuxi and also the district’s Secretary of the Party Working Committee.
In 2019, WND reported the business revenue of 53.3 billion yuan generated by the biomedical industry, a year-on-year increase of 20 percent, accounting for 60 percent of the city’s total.
The district is home to 150 companies mainly specialized in medicine, medical equipment, and healthcare, including WuXi AppTec, Nutricia, Dizal Pharma, GE Healthcare and other leading companies.
Currently, more than 10,000 professionals, including six top experts included in the national talent schemes, are now working in the district’s life science sector. The district also plays host to 7 provincial technology centres and 4 postdoctoral stations, a clear sign of its technological strengths.
Among the latest progress, the Wuxi International Life Science Innovation Campus (I·Campus) opened in late April. Co-built by the district and AstraZeneca, I·Campus has already attracted 17 companies and projects from countries and regions such as the UK and Russia.
Zhu Xiaohong, deputy director of the administration committee of WND, said the district has mapped out a three-year plan and will allocate 500 million yuan a year to offer rental and talent subsidies. Meanwhile, WND will also set up an industrial fund of 10 billion yuan to facilitate financing efforts.
