Jiangsu Province has recently issued a guideline on wetland protection covering the period from 2023 to 2030.
The coastal province is home to 3.12 million hectares of wetlands with a current protection rate of 47.6%. The guideline sets targets to increase the rate to 48% by 2025, focusing on enhancing wetland biodiversity and carbon sequestration, and to 55% by 2030.
The province’s wetland restoration campaign will extend to areas along the Yangtze River, the Huaihe River, the Grand Canal, the Taihu Lake basin and coastal regions. Jiangsu also aims to restore wetlands in urban and rural venues, abandoned mines, subsidence areas and wastewater treatment facilities.
To improve wetland management capacity, Jiangsu will implement comprehensive programs for survey, evaluation, monitoring and research of the wetland resources.
