Environmental quality of surface water in May in East China’s Jiangsu Province decreased compared with last month, according to the latest report of the province’s Department of Ecology and Environment.
Surface water quality in China is divided into five classes, with Class I being the best.
Data showed 78.1% of surface water at state-monitored sections was graded Class I to III (good quality) in the period, while the figure for Class V water hit 0.5%. At the province-monitored sections, the proportion for Class I to III and Class V was 83.5% and 0.9%, respectively.
Data also showed 88.3% of surface water at key sections in the Taihu Lake basin met the standards, 82.1% for Hongze Lake. Class III water in the Jiangsu section of the east part of the South-North Water Transfer project accounted for 90.9%.
In addition, among 117 Centralized Drinking Water Sources at or above the county level, 117 met the quality standards, a compliance rate of 99.1%.
A centralized drinking water source is defined as a water source that supplies a population over 1,000 people, according to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.
