Nearly 1,000 participants attended 2023 World Coastal Forum, which kicked off in East China’s coastal city Yancheng on September 25.

Themed at “Our Coasts: Harmony between People and Nature“, the three-day event co-hosted by Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government, Ministry of Natural Resources and National Forestry and Grassland Administration aims to serve as an international platform for coastal ecological protection and sustainable development.

Coastal areas are rich in biodiversity and economically developed, with important routes for migratory birds. However, coastal ecosystems are facing severe challenges such as degradation and biodiversity loss caused by climate change, pollution, land reclamation etc.

The World Coastal Forum is an active response to the initiatives launched by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Convention on Wetlands of Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar), the Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to call for joint efforts to promote protection, restoration and sustainable development of coastal areas.

The opening ceremony of the forum released a number of fruitful results, including the Cooperation Framework Agreement on Supporting the World Coastal Forum among Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, Ministry of Natural Resources and National Forestry and Grassland Administration and the announcement of the WCF Partnership Initiative.
