Jiangsu Province showcased its exquisite tea products and rich cultural heritage associated with tea at the China Cultural Centre in Singapore on the afternoon of May 13.
The Tea for Harmony Yaji Cultural Salon was organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China and the Chinese Embassy in Singapore and hosted jointly by the China International Culture Association, the Department of Culture and Tourism of Jiangsu Province, and the Singaporean centre.
The activity provided opportunities for visitors to sample various quality teas produced in Jiangsu, such as Suzhou’s Dongting Biluochun, Yuhua Tea from Nanjing, and Yixing black tea, which were carefully prepared on-site by specialists. In addition, masters from Yangzhou’s famous Fuchun Teahouse also demonstrated the making of delicate pastries that perfectly match tea drinking.
In addition, visitors could learn about Yixing purple clay teapots, which show outstanding craftsmanship, or taste the snacks from Suzhou’s time-honored brand Qianshengyuan.
In late 2022, traditional tea processing techniques and associated social practices in China was added to the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list. This included the techniques and social practices related to Biluochun, Yuhua tea and Fuchun Teahouse pastries.
The province’s Department of Culture and Tourism decided to take advantage of the UNESCO recognition to promote tea abroad, with the activity in Singapore being the first of this international promotion campaign held ahead of International Tea Day, celebrated every year on May 21.
Singapore has been an important source of international tourists from Southeast Asia to Jiangsu and is also a favored destination of Jiangsu’s outbound travelers. In boosting tourism recovery, Jiangsu has attached importance to the Singapore market. On May 12, the province also held the Discovering the Charm of Jiangsu's Tea Culture promotion meeting specially for the local tourism industry and media outlets.
