Ports in Jiangsu Province handled 150 million tonnes of cargo for foreign trade during the first quarter of this year, a year-on-year increase of 15.3%, according to Nanjing Customs.
Zhenjiang Customs House completed the customs clearance for six diesel generators weighing 224.37 tonnes on May 8 for export to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where they will be used for a copper cobalt project in Kambove. Jointly developed by China Nonferrous Mining Corporation Limited and DRC’s state mining company Gécamines, this project is expected to create about 1,000 jobs after it opens, providing employment opportunities for local people and driving economic development in Kambove and surrounding areas.
From January to April this year, Nantong Customs House handled 839 inbound and outbound vessels, an increase of 11.42% year-on-year. Recently, under its supervision, the sixth polar expedition cruise vessel developed by China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) successfully completed the customs filing and certificates before sailing. The 104.4-meter-long vessel is 18.4 meters at the beam and can operate at a speed of 15.5 knots. It is also a world leader in terms of technology and unique features.
To improve navigation and turnover capacity, Nanjing Customs has expanded the application of port facilitation measures and optimized the business environment at ports. It opened a new channel to support the export of new cruise vessels and provided on-site supervision and streamlined certificate processing.
In addition, customs authorities in Yancheng completed inspection of a vessel loaded with 65,000 tonnes of soybeans imported from Brazil in a timely manner, allowing the cargo to be delivered directly to enterprises through sea-river intermodal transport.
The enhanced service has benefited companies concerned about customs clearance speed as the city has become a hub of soybean processing.
"The soybeans were transported to us at least one week in advance, which means reduced customs clearance time, and this provided a strong backing for our supply, and also saved us more than 100,000 yuan in storage costs," said Qian Fu, manager of Jiangsu Xidengmen Co Ltd.
