Jiangsu has one individual and one group granted the May Fourth Medal, the top honor for outstanding young Chinese people, in the 27th edition of the awards event. The annual list of winners nationwide included 30 individuals and 19 groups.
The individual winner from Jiangsu is Gan Lin, director of the R&D center at the National Supercomputing Wuxi Center. The center’s Sunway TaihuLight was not only the world’s fastest supercomputer but also built entirely using processors designed and made in China, a national record. Gan has led his team to achieve many technical breakthroughs, contributing to China’s plan to provide supercomputer that works fast, well and accurately.
At the center, Gan is the youngest project leader and part-time cadre of the Communist Youth League of China. He was also part of a team previously awarded the Gordon Bell Prize.
In addition, Gan has supported efforts to leverage resources to build the center into a hub specially for young scientists, which has received more than 40,000 visitors in total. The center was also recognized as a "National Patriotic Education Demonstration Base" by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee.
The group winner from Jiangsu is a 46-member team in the field of dynamic lightning protection from Suzhou Power Supply branch of State Grid Jiangsu. The team members have an average age of 30 and 91% are under the age of 35. The team has obtained 30 invention patents at home and abroad, with its innovative achievements highly recognized by three top international organizations in lighting protection. It also won honors at the 33rd International Conference on Lightning Protection and by the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering.
