On the first day of the new year, tens of thousands of people joined a walking event along the Grand Canal in eight cities of Jiangsu Province, namely Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Zhenjiang, Yangzhou, Huai’an, Suqian and Xuzhou.
In Changzhou, Sun Aiyi, 54, joined a team of 100 members in the event, saying that taking a walk on the first day of the new year means a good start and luck ahead.
The Grand Canal, the world's longest man-made waterway, runs from Beijing in the north to Zhejiang in the south, passing through several provinces. Jiangsu is home to the longest section of the Grand Canal, most cities along the waterway, richest cultural heritage, and most sites recognized as the UNESCO world heritage.
