Jiangsu Province has strengthened management of waterways and ports to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Over 100 ships on international routes every day make port calls at the province’s 230 ports. In the first half of this year, the ports handled imports and exports totaling 300 million tons, more than 5,000 times the volume of international air cargo and mail.

On the morning of August 5, Nanjing Port Longtan Container Terminal was bustling with cargo ships in the process of loading or unloading. Workers disinfected all operational areas after a foreign container vessel left the port, which has implemented strict restrictions over inbound vessels. To ensure safety, the terminal only accepts port call of three foreign vessels per day. All personnel on board foreign vessels are not allowed to disembark unless it is absolutely necessary. Seafarers in crew changes also need to be placed under quarantine. Foreign ships are also banned from discharging sewage and rubbish at the port. The reception, transfer and disposal of pollutants from foreign ships will be handled by local governments as medical waste.

From July 31 on August 4, Jiangsu reported the receiving of 77.98 tons of waste and over 5,168 cubic meters of sewage, which got disinfected and then disposed of.

The province set up a total of 267 waterway inspection points, including 37 on the main watercourses of inland rivers and 230 in ports for foreign trade.
