The port of Dafeng in Yancheng received 2,940 tons of Russian barley in early February, the first such import for the city since China and Russia signed an agreement in 2019.
The importing is significant to China in diversifying the source of agricultural imports. Russia is one of the main producers of barley, which has a high quality and is suitable for direct use or as raw material for brewing and other food industries.
Liang Xunguang, an officer of the local customs, said comprehensive efforts have been made to speed up the customs clearance procedures including the early preparation for TCK tests and checks of relevant certificates and documents. Local customs will conduct other tests of the barley to ensure safety to the environment and consumers.
Yancheng Port, which includes four coastal port areas, is an important hub of grains import in Jiangsu Province. It saw 1.435 million tons of imported grain in 2021 with a total value of $630 million, up 10.3% and 43.1% respectively. In order to ensure food safety and efficient customs clearance, local customs have optimized the business environment and allow application for inspection 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
