Wuxi expands shore power system to minimize vessel emissions

Wuxi City in East China’s Jiangsu Province has installed shore power system at over 60 inland river ports as a new effort to minimize emissions at berth.

A shore power system allows berthing ships to shut down their auxiliary engines and rely on electricity from shore side, so the air in port is free of emissions from diesel generators.

At a port of Wuxi Municipal Construction Group, manager Li Anan was eager to explain the new system to the operator of a cargo ship laden with sand and gravel at Xizhang Industrial Park.

By the end of June, Wuxi will promote the system at all its over 300 ports. It’s expected that the service will be ready by the end of this year, giving a strong support to the city’s initiative of low-carbon ports.
