Promoting science and technology innovation has been recognized as a top priority in Jiangsu according to its Outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035.
Jiangsu aims to build S&T innovation centers with global influence and facilitate the synergistic effect in coordination with institutional innovation. It’s the first time for the province to devote a separate chapter to this endeavor in the development blueprint.
Yang Guishan, president of the Nanjing branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), said the academy and Jiangsu are joining efforts to develop the Nanjing Chi-Lin Hi-Tech Industry Development Zone. The zone will foster 1-2 major scientific and technological infrastructure, build 3-5 cutting-edge cross-disciplinary research centers and technology platforms, and host 50 research institutes by 2025. During the period, the zone will also introduce 40 international top-notch talents and 5,000 entrepreneurial and innovative professionals to settle in the city.
In January, a research team of the Nanjing-based Purple Mountain Laboratories won the 2021 IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S) Best Paper Award for Microwave. Liu Yunjie, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and head of the Purple Mountain Laboratories, said the institute will try to make breakthroughs in the field of next-generation networks and endogenous security.
Liu also said that the Purple Mountain Laboratories is building itself into a hub to train high-level talent and stimulating innovation with support measures.
Li Zheng, director of the Academic Department of the Jiangsu Association for Science and Technology, said the association is drafting a 3-year action plan to support innovation-driven growth in Jiangsu. The plan includes cooperation with 30 world renowned universities and R&D institutions in foreign countries and regions, and establishment of 50 offshore innovation centers or liaison stations.
