The rail-ocean intermodal transport linking Wuxi City in Jiangsu Province and Shanghai Port reported the first service on December 1, when a freight train loaded with solar panels, electric cars, auto parts and other items left Wuxi South Railway Station.
The new route means exporters from Wuxi and neighboring areas can make the best use of Shanghai Port to reach the global market at a much lower transport cost. The governments of Wuxi City and Jiangsu Province have provided supportive policy to boost the rail-sea service.
Development of multimodal transport is gaining momentum as it can help minimize cost and provide on-time service. In the combined rail–ocean transport, foreign trade goods are transported directly between the coastal ports and inland destinations, a process that needs just one-stop customs declaration and inspection. Such service has the advantages of large cargo transport, low cost, safety and low pollution emissions.
