A freight train carrying 1,100 tons of cargo in 55 TEUs left the China- Kazakhstan logistics base in Lianyungang City on November 3, and is expected to arrive Tashkent, Uzbekistan on November 15.

The China-Europe and China-Asia freight train service from the coastal city has seen a significant growth this year. Data showed 306 trains loaded with 32,000 TEUs had departed the logistics base by November 3, a year-on-year growth of 65.6 percent.

Amid rigorous response to the COVID-19 pandemic, local railway authorities strengthened coordination with ports and customs to ensure a smooth cargo transportation.

Chen Juan, director of the Lianyungang Operation Department of Xuzhou Freight Center, said efforts have been made to contact key enterprises and improve cargo organization, which has contributed to the reopening and rebound of foreign trade.

The logistics base is the first physical project after the proposal of the overland Silk Road Economic Belt, which together with the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road is commonly known as the Belt and Road Initiative. Among the latest developments, the base launched the freight train service to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on December 29 last year. Then June 8 this year saw the opening of the Japan - China (Lianyungang) – Mongolia container transportation service linking the sea and rail routes.
