A symposium to promote reform related to industrial workers in the Yangtze River Delta, which consists of Shanghai municipality and the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui, took place in Nanjing City on August 1, the first such high-level meeting in the key economic center of China.

The event saw the signing of agreement to establish a joint conference among chairmen of the federation of trade unions and launching of work skills competition among workers in 100 key projects that advance the delta’s integrated development, a national strategy.

The three provinces and Shanghai will increase coordination and cooperation to support the overall development. As one of China's most economically active, open and innovative regions, the delta region produces about one-fourth of the national GDP and is home to about 66 million workers in various industries, or nearly 33 percent in the country’s total number of industrial workers.

In recent years, the region has introduced many measures to promote reform related to industrial workers. Jiangsu, as one of two provinces to pilot this reform in China and home to 23 million industrial workers, launched 23 measures involving five major tasks in order to carry out the Party work and also boost production, such as inviting model workers to visit schools or teachers of ideological work to visit enterprises.

Jiangsu has also made reforms in other aspects including job qualification, managerial skills grading, and labor relations evaluation in private companies. The reform efforts, first promoted in 110 selected enterprises in five cities, give priority to SOEs in playing a pioneering role in the political work, trailblazing efforts in non-public enterprises, and exemplary practices in the textile industry.

It’s expected that the new joint working mechanism and plenty of events scheduled, including more support to worker’s rights and interest, will help improve the level of industrial workers in the key economic center and facilitate the region’s high-quality development.
