Yangtze River Delta’s broccoli research institute unveiled in Xiangshui

A national exchange on new broccoli varieties as well the establishment of a research institute to promote broccoli farming in the Yangtze River Delta were held in Xiangshui County of Jiangsu Province on November 6.

The event in Xiangshui, known as hometown of broccoli in China, attracted China’s well-known vegetable industry leaders, scholars and professors from top research institutes in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai and local officials in charge of broccoli farming and technology promotion.

In recent years, Xiangshui has increased efforts to develop broccoli industry, build the market competitiveness, and supported the high-quality development of local vegetable-growing industry.

The edible green plant has become a key driver for people’s income increase. The county grows broccoli over an area of about 100,000 mu(6,667 hectares), including a core plantation area of 40,000 mu, making it the largest broccoli production base in China.

Xiangshui’s broccoli is sold both in domestic markets and Japan, South Korea, Europe and America. The county has also built a premier overseas production base and aims to set the industry benchmark in scientific and technological innovation.
