The Zhenjiang Bureau of Ecology and Environment announced on June 18 that the world’s first multi-model electric vehicle (EV) battery swapping station has been officially completed and put into operation the city.
The 4.5-million-yuan ($634,974) project started construction in August 2018 and covers an area of 128 square meters. It serves to swap out a dead battery pack for a fresh one in just three minutes. It currently supports four EV types including the Lifan 650 EV.
The station includes an adjustable platform to fit vehicle models with different wheel track and wheelbase specifications. After the vehicle is put in place, a robot rises from below the platform to remove the depleted battery. At the same time, the storage management area dispatches a suitable fully charged battery for the robot to load onto the bottom of the EV. The depleted battery is conveyed to the warehouse management area, where it waits for centralized charging at another designated area.
