Zhang Qingheng, a staff member at Nanjing East Railway Station, dedicated ten days to completing a sand painting work in celebration of the Year of the Dragon.
His creation depicts a Fuxing bullet train, imaginatively transformed into a majestic dragon, transporting passengers to home for the Chinese New Year holiday. Zhang said he had integrated traditional Chinese painting techniques to craft the dragon's scales, whiskers and eyes using colored sands.
The artwork includes three scenes: a dragon soaring above the Great Wall, the traditional custom of the dragon dance, and the Fuxing train heading towards destination.
Zhang, a post-90s, majored in railway transportation at university. He began to teach himself the art form in 2012. To date, Zhang has created over 20 sand painting works, collectively garnering over 500 million views. Four of his designs have been exhibited on trains and ten have been showcased on TV channels.
Zhang expressed his joy over the growing popularity of his works. More importantly, he said he volunteered at schools and neighborhoods to teach children sand painting, which gave him more fullfillment in the past year.
