In ancient times, dragon was often depicted in palaces, temples and tombs. As an auspicious symbol, it also appeared in stone monuments.

In Jiangsu Province, the Xiaoling Mausoleum of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), a UNESCO world heritage site, boasts the most dragon designs on stone carvings. The burial site of Zhu Yuanzhan, the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty, is adorned with many dragon images. In 2007, three large stone relief carvings featuring dragon patterns, with a total length of 5.1 meters, were unearthed here.

Additionally, the image of the dragon is displayed on many ancient bridges in the Jiangnan region. People believe this powerful animal can ward off disasters and bless pedestrians with safety.
