East China’s Jiangsu Province has recorded 358 species of birds in 68 families in a biodiversity survey, according to a work conference by the provincial Department of Ecology and Environment on April 17. The meeting also introduced progress in building a bird observation network across the coastal province, which celebrates the annual Bird Week from April 20 to 26.
Liu Weijing, director of the Jiangsu Provincial Academy of Environmental Science, said the number of bird species in Jiangsu increased by 47, or 15%, compared with the first report in 2020.

In 2017, Jiangsu took the lead in the country in carrying out biodiversity surveys at the county level. Then, in 2021, the province expanded bird studies in key areas such as along the river, coast and the Grand Canal, and on low hills. Additionally, Jiangsu has built 20 observation stations at the provincial level.

The number of bird species and population in Jiangsu both increased steadily, indicating the improvement of ecological environment. Zhang Yong, deputy director of the provincial environmental monitoring center, said more efforts will be made to build the biodiversity monitoring network and expand the research topic and outreach. Zhang also said Jiangsu will explore the application of various observation techniques, strengthen the use of AI image recognition, and promote the research and development of non-destructive observation technologies such as LIDAR and e-DNA to make the endeavor more science-based and accurate.
