Jiangsu Province’s summer grain output reached more than 14 billion kilograms, up 195 million kilograms from last year, which accounted for 13.6% of the national increase, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). 

The province’s planting area for summer grain increased by 138,000 mu to 37.062 million mu, 9.3% of the national total. This included the wheat planting area of 35.659 million mu, up 291,000 mu or a year-on-year growth of 0.8%.

Jiangsu reported growths in planting area, unit area yield and total output, with the expansion rate all above the national average.  

Du Yonglin, director of the Office of Crop Production at the province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, said the bumper summer grain harvest is a result of priority of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee and the provincial government given to grain production.  

The province has enhanced policy support, coordination to build high-standard farmland, professional services in agricultural production and efficiency improvement, according to Du. For example, the government sent six working teams to guide wheat planting in last autumn and active efforts were also made this summer to ensure harvest.
