The number of passengers through airports in Jiangsu in May increased by 159.1% compared to one month ago thanks to progress in COVID-19 response, putting an end to the continuous decline since February this year, according to the province’s Department of Transport on June 23.

The province also saw its international air cargo and mail throughput in May rise by 33.2% than in April.

The coastal province has relaxed pandemic restrictions since May 10, leading to the recovery of air transport. In May, Jiangsu’s nine airports handled 1.077 million passengers. During the five-day May Day holiday, the average daily flight and passenger number reached 264 and 19,000 respectively. Jiangsu's air transport is expected to achieve accelerated recovery in June amid gradual improvement of the epidemic situation.

In addition, the province's air cargo transport also hit more than 52,645 tonnes in May due to a series of measures to stabilize investment and promote consumption. The Nantong Xingdong International Airport saw its cargo transport increase by 24.2% year on year as express delivery giant SF Express increased its operations and some flights were resumed. The Changzhou Benniu International Airport also opened freight flights to Beijing, Tianjin and Quanzhou, which led to a cargo volume growth of 115.9% than in April. The international cargo and mail through the Sunan Shuofang International Airport increased by 12.8% year-on-year.
