Autonomous rail rapid transit system in test operation in delta’s demonstration zone

The eco-friendly development demonstration zone in the Yangtze River Delta began the trial operation of driverless autonomous rail rapid transit system on May 10.

The zone spans Qingpu District in Shanghai, Jiashan County in Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province and Wujiang District. It’s deemed as the pioneer in accelerating the integrated development of the broader Yangtze River Delta region, a national strategy.

The electric vehicle runs on an autonomous rail rapid transit, an urban transport system that has been described as a cross between a bus, train and tram. The three-carriage vehicle is 31.64 meters long, has a maximum speed of 70 km per hour and can carry up to 307 passengers.

It travels on a 5.1-km route to mainly serves tourists in Tongli scenic spot. Equipped with sensors, the self-driving vehicle can read the dimensions of a road and ensure safety.
