The work committee for disabled people of Jiangsu government held a plenary session on May 8, announcing progress and ongoing efforts to help the disadvantaged group.

As COVID-19 prevention and control measures become routine, the committee’s 34 member organizations have taken solid measures to secure jobs and basic life necessities of those living with disabilities.

The province vows to leave none of 4.79 million disable people behind in securing a full victory in the anti-poverty battle this year and achieving the first centenary goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.

Due to the impact of the pandemic, the province only reported 933 new jobs taken by the disabled who also registered their real name, a decrease of 42.83 percent year on year. Many companies had less jobs and were unwilling to recruit disabled people, who also faced increased salary cut or delay and lay-off. Businesses in the category of offering supported employment saw their orders to drop by 40 percent.

Since the end of March, many cities have resumed job fairs specially for the disabled, including 378 jobs offered at a fair in Suzhou City. Meanwhile, Nanjing and Wuxi also made efforts to better match the human resources supply and enterprise demand.

Jiangsu will fully open the online registration of unemployment, promote job services and subsidy applications on the Internet, host online job fairs, and organize special job events to help the disabled. Older and lower-skilled persons with disabilities, who have limited knowledge of Internet, can get information update by telephone and text message.
