Jiangsu saw a surge of cargo tonnage of international freight fuelled by the resumption of work and the need of COVID-19 response materials on the international market, said the Jiangsu Department of Transport revealed on June 23.
From January to May, the province handled 33,000 tons of cargo and mail, a year-on-year increase of 9.0 percent, the first positive growth this year. In May, the province’s international air cargo and mail volume reached 12,000 tons, an increase of 94.2 percent compared to the same period last year.
A total of 575 freight planes departed and arrived at the provincial airports in May, an increase of 46.7 percent compared to the previous month.
Due to the substantial increase of charted passenger flights and passenger-converted cargo flights, the province’s flights have connected with 65 cities of 36 countries in four continents of Europe, America, Asia and Africa. It has a closer connection with 48 direct destinations in Europe and America, which accounted for 74.2 percent of outbound cargo flights. Germany has surpassed the US to rank first in terms of exports cargo.
