The Jiangsu Week of Kunqu Opera will be launched in Paris from September 12 to 16.
The program will include shows from the classic repertoire, interactive experiences, exhibitions and academic seminars, offering audiences a feast of one of the oldest forms of Chinese opera still performed today.
The year 2023 marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between China and the European Union, and next year will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France.
The program aims to show the distinctive characteristics of Chinese civilization and the spiritual symbol of Chinese culture. It also seeks to promote cultural and people-to-people exchanges between China and other countries.
On September 13 and 14, the Musée National des Arts Asiatiques – Guimet, home to an important collection of Asian art in Europe, will hold a special exhibition on Kunqu culture, showcasing the history, props, costumes, musical instruments and international exchanges associated with the theatrical form. It will offer visitors a glimpse into both the heritage and development of Chinese culture as well as Jiangsu’s efforts in exploring the Chinese path to modernization.
On September 14 and 15, Jiangsu Kunqu Theatre will present “Peony Pavilion,” written by Tang Xianzu during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), at the Théâtre Libre. From September 12 to 16, Kunqu performances will be featured in exchanges at museums and universities across Paris. Performers will also participate in flash mobs at landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe.
On September 15, the China Cultural Center in Paris will host a seminar for experts and scholars from France and other countries to engaged in discussions and exchanges.
An advance team led by artists who won the Plum Blossom Award, China's highest theatrical honor, have been participating in warm-up activities since September 9, such as gatherings, performance workshops and initiatives for young people.
