In Chinese culture, the lotus flower, despite emerging from the mud, symbolizes lofty character and unstained purity. This love of the flower is echoed in numerous poems spanning various dynasties as well as in elaborate designs and treasured cultural relics.

During the summer season, a visit to museums in Jiangsu Province will uncover the relics associated with the cherished flower.

Among the fine collection in Suzhou Museum, there is a jar with lotus leaf-shaped lid, while the object's middle part features chrysanthemum petals. Based on the shape, decorations and other characteristics, the ware appears to embody the style of the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).

The museum also houses a porcelain lotus bowl, a remarkable piece of the Five Dynasties (907-960) period. This rare celadon ware, resembling a lotus flower in full bloom, appears crystal-clear and exquisite.

Zhenjiang Museum boasts a 'fish' dish from the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). The round shallow plate, adorned with a lotus petal pattern, features a large lotus leaf at the centre of a pond, while turtles swim around, accompanied by four carps, creating a playful summer scene at a lotus pond.

Also housed in the museum is an incredible lotus petal plate from the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The ware, despite its plain style, stands out for its vivid lotus flower design, an auspicious symbol.

There is a lotus leaf-shaped porcelain ware from the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) in Changzhou Museum. The cup with saucer features lotus petals on its exterior, giving it the appearance of a blossoming flower.

The museum also displays a Jingdezhen kiln cup with saucer from the Northern Song Dynasty. The ware features six lotus petals and looks nearly translucent, resembling a blooming lotus flower.

Among the collections in Wuxi Museum, visitors will be glad to encounter a painting by Li Fangying of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), which depicts two lotus flowers in the water with sturdy and impressive stems.
