The Nanjing City Wall Museum has reopened ahead of International Museum Day, which takes place on May 18.
It features an exhibition of several zodiac animal head statues, important cultural relics from the Old Summer Palace in Beijing, or "Yuanmingyuan." The exhibition is also part of the "Night at the Museum,” an annual cultural and educational program.
Ma Lin, executive deputy director of the Nanjing City Wall Protection Management Center, said the museum has adjusted the exhibits after considering suggestions made by experts and residents, now providing more cultural relics on display and detailed introduction to the historical and cultural remains of Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
For example, the stone fence for a well of Ming Dynasty discovered in the West Water Gate and the old iron lock used in the Ming and Qing dynasties help explain people’s life and City Wall administration in the past. Another significant change in the renovation is the increased use of inscriptions and rubbings, a traditional medium for preserving art and culture, to show the information of relics in more engaging ways.
