Jiangsu celebrated the World Wildlife Day with a theme of “Recovering key species for ecosystem restoration and Promoting the beautiful China initiative” on the afternoon of March 2.

The event was jointly organized by a Shanghai-based office of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, Jinling Customs, the Wildlife Protection Station of the Jiangsu Provincial Forestry Bureau in cooperation with the Hongshan Forest Zoo in Nanjing.

In the event, young visitors became very interested in the specimens of various animals including the corn snake and the Malaysian forest scorpion for their unfamiliar names or appearances.

Jinling Customs seized the wildlife trafficked to China, including a corn snake hidden inside an imported toy filled with sands.

Jinling Customs seized 404 products from endangered wild animals and plants in 143 batches in 2021 including ivory and red corals. The event also showed the harms caused by invasive species, such as pinewood nematode to trees on Purple Mountain in Nanjing and Huangshan Mountain in Anhui Province.

The event also featured an exhibition of endangered wildlife specimens, a display of rare wildlife science, a puppet show on the theme of the Year of the Tiger. Through the Q&A sessions, lectures and handouts, it aimed to raise the public awareness of varied forms of wild fauna and flora and promote the fight against illegal trading of animal and plant products.
