Jiangsu’s 21 universities made it on to the list of the 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU 2021), published by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, an organization on higher education intelligence.

Universities are ranked by several indicators, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution.

Among the 1,000 universities ranked by the organization, 157 are in the Chinese mainland including 21 in the coastal province, the largest group. Jiangsu also have 13 universities on the top 500 list, a tie with Beijing.

In the top tier, Nanjing University, Southeast University and Soochow University secured their places among the top 200.

Nanjing Medical University and Nanjing Tech University moved up to be among the world’s top 400 universities for the first time. It was also a breakthrough for Nanjing Normal University and Yangzhou University that rose to top 500 for the first time.
