Jointly organized by the Jiangsu Department of Civil Affairs and the Jiangsu Committee of the Chinese Communist Youth League (CCYL Jiangsu), a child-care summer class opened in Sihong County, Suqian City on August 3.

The program will include 50 such classes to benefit left-behind children and those disadvantaged rural children in 12 counties, under the administration of 5 northern Jiangsu cities.  The counties are all designated as the province’s priorities to receive assistance in poverty alleviation efforts.

This is also the largest such summer program organized by the provincial-level authorities.

In Suqian, Wu Xiaoyu, 12, was very excited to join this class since the program includes group visits to parks and museums and she will feel less lonely in the long summer holiday. She currently lives with her grandparents in the county while her parents, bringing her twin brothers, are working and living in Hangzhou City of Zhejiang Province.

Zhu Hongyi, local CCYL chief in Sihong, said the county has 8,916 children like Wu Xiaoyu who lives not with their parents. The summer classes in five townships will include 140 left-behind children. Such class, staffed with one teacher and four volunteers, will run for 24 days.
